‘When you're tired of being asked when your child is going
to talk, remember that these successful people didn't begin talking until they
were at least 2—and, in some cases, 4!

‘Sometimes it’s not wrong to consider
other people's concern so as to compare your child's development with others
similar to his age. Some parents esp those with a firstborn child may not be as
sensitive regarding their child's developmental milestones. Some
kids (esp boys) may have undiagnosed mild learning disorders, that are easily
dealt with if detected early. It may not be easy to accept but if no specialist
(paeds with special interest (or subspecialty) in children with learning
disability) has been consulted then maybe it is time to do so.
I have seen a few cases (boys) 1) 3
years old boy having difficulty in understanding instructions, very
temperamental, unable to engage in playing with other kids, unable to talk yet
- advised mother to seek professional advice, mother declined, saying she doesn’t
think child has learning disability. 2) 7 years old boy, started schooling this
week, learned to speak words at 5 years old, currently only able to speak 2
words sentences, unable to understand or communicate beyond basic needs,
temperamental at home and in public, Mother started having suspicions since he
was 2/3 years of age but teachers, friends and family kept saying "child
is normal, give time etc".
Only consulted me yesterday when 2
parents of children in her son's class pointed out that her son is not
"normal" and having difficulty coping in school. Upon seeing child
noted that he does have autism characteristic - referral to paeds given. Mother
is very sorry that she did not act on her suspicion earlier. Conclusion: if you
have any doubt on your child's milestones, seek professional help first before
wanting to settle on waiting and being very accepting. Hope this helps kak su.
Only sharing through working experience....i do agree that some of the great
people you mentioned had delayed milestones but during those days, autism or
other learning disorders go undetected as there were less awareness in the
public.‘.
